The one who brings it home
Scotty was raised in a hunting family where time outdoors wasn’t a hobby — it was simply part of life. When he was six years old, his parents purchased a little over eight acres of hunting land near Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. By the time he was ten, they had built a small cabin on the property, and it quickly became a place where weekends, seasons, and family memories revolved around the woods.
Under the guidance of his father, Scotty began hunting at the legal age of 12 in 2004, years before Pennsylvania’s mentor hunting program existed. From the very beginning, hunting wasn’t just about harvesting an animal. It was about patience, respect for wildlife, and learning to understand the land — reading sign, watching wind direction, and studying animal behavior long before trail cameras and apps became common tools.
Over the past 14+ years, Scotty has developed into a dedicated and knowledgeable hunter. He spends countless hours scouting, studying habitat patterns, and continually learning through research and hunting podcasts. He is especially interested in how weather, thermals, and terrain affect animal movement, and he carefully selects equipment and firearms suited to the specific game and environment he is hunting.
Hunting, for Scotty, is not about trophies. It is about providing. Because of his commitment and skill, our family freezers are consistently stocked with venison and other wild game. That harvest feeds our household, supplies many of the recipes shared on this site, and fuels our passion for processing, preserving, and cooking the food we obtain ourselves.
At the heart of it, his hunting is one of the foundations of our homestead lifestyle — a direct connection between the land, the table, and our family.
The woman behind From Hunt to Homestead
Hi, I’m Kim Andrew — wife, mom of four, and the voice behind From Hunt to Homestead.
Long before hunting entered my life, I already loved the idea of doing things ourselves. I grew up gardening, learning how food was grown, and preserving what we could. Canning jars and home-cooked meals were familiar to me, but I never imagined that one day I would also be butchering deer in my kitchen and rendering tallow on my stove.
That part started when I met my husband, Scotty.
Early in our relationship, Scotty harvested a deer and I went with him to pick up the processed meat from a butcher shop. When I saw the bill, I was honestly shocked. We had already put in the time, the effort, and the harvest — yet we were still paying a large amount to have someone else finish the job. That was my turning point. I decided I wanted to learn how to process our own food, not just to save money, but to truly understand where it came from.
What began as curiosity quickly became a passion. I started learning how to break down deer, package meat, grind burger, and eventually cook wild game in ways our whole family actually enjoyed eating. From there came preserving, stock making, rendering fat, and using as much of the animal as possible. I realized hunting wasn’t just about the harvest — it was about responsibility, respect, and using what you take.
Today, our home revolves around that mindset. We cook from scratch, process our own meat, preserve food when we can, and teach our kids the same skills. From Hunt to Homestead exists because I know how overwhelming this lifestyle can feel at first. I wasn’t raised knowing how to process a deer or cook venison — I learned step by step, mistake by mistake.
This site is here to make it approachable.
If you’ve ever stood in your kitchen staring at a package of wild game and wondered, “Okay… now what?” — you’re in the right place.
Our Greatest Harvest
Travis
Travis is our oldest and a steady part of daily life around our home. He helps with animal chores, rotates responsibilities with his sister, and is always willing to lend a hand when needed. He especially enjoys fishing and spending time working alongside his dad. He’s growing up learning responsibility, teamwork, and that everyone contributes in their own way.
Aubrey
Aubrey has a natural love for the outdoors and jumped into hunting with confidence. She enjoys hunting and fishing, helps with cleaning and processing her harvests, and even likes being part of the cooking afterwards. She also helps care for the animals and stays busy with wrestling. She’s tough, determined, and has a big heart — especially when it comes to animals and family.
Paisley
Paisley is one of our little helpers and loves being outside with the rest of the family. She enjoys feeding the animals, collecting eggs, and following along with whatever is happening that day. She has a very tender heart, especially for the goats, and eagerly waits for kidding season so she can gently love on the babies. She brings a lot of sweetness to daily life here.
Tommy
Tommy is always ready to help. Whether it’s working in the yard or handing Scotty tools during house projects, he wants to be right in the middle of it. He loves playing with the animals, riding his green tractor and Power Wheels truck, and spending as much time outside as possible. Dirt, digging, and exploring are his specialties, and he keeps daily life here busy and fun.
